"The Restatement of Love" is a serious spoof. My law school roommate, Jamie Heller, and I decided to apply legal concepts - like prescriptive easement and constructive
eviction - to romance.
We put our conclusions in the form of a "Restatement." A “restatement” is a legal reference book that explains the law in a general area, such as
“The Restatement of Contracts” or “The Restatement of Torts.”
Though the contrast between the stuffy, lawyerly language and the topic makes the piece comical, The Restatement of Love is a thoughtful examination of the
laws governing courtship and love. It was published in the Yale Law Journal, 104 Yale L.J. 707 (1994).
An excerpt from "The Restatement of Love" was posted on The Wall Street Journal Online on Valentine's Day, 2006 and was one of the most-emailed articles that day.
