Want to Boost Your Happiness? Start a Happiness-Project Group.

One of the happiness-project resolutions that I’ve found to be most effective – and also the most fun – is to Join or start a group. Since I started my happiness project, I’ve joined or started eleven groups (!).

Some people are interested in starting or joining a group for people doing happiness projects – to my astonishment, thousands of people have requested the starter-kit for people launching such a group.

Participating in this kind of group can really boost your happiness. People can swap ideas, build enthusiasm, and – perhaps most important if you want to make changes in your life – hold each other accountable. People join Alcoholics Anonymous and Weight Watchers, for example, to keep themselves accountable.

Also, just being part of a group, whatever the focus might be, builds happiness. It helps you make new friends and deepen existing friendships. One thing is absolutely clear: a key to happiness is having close relationships with other people. Studies show that group membership helps people feel connected and gives a real boost to satisfaction and personal confidence. It’s a way to interact with people who share your values.
Being part of a group can also be a source of an atmosphere of growth in your life.

Now, a lot of people say, “I don’t have time to form or join a group.” Maybe you can’t meet once a week, but how about once every six weeks? As someone who has very little free time, I find that being part of an organized group is a very efficient way to strengthen relationships. Instead of having to take the initiative to see the group members individually, I know I’ll see them together.

One observation: it takes special energy to start something. The number of people who are willing to start something is much smaller than the number of people who will join it. As Samuel Johnson noted, “The production of something, where nothing was before, is an act of greater energy than the expansion or decoration of the thing produced.” But every time I’ve made the effort to start something (for example, my three children’s literature reading groups), I’ve ended up being very happy that I did.

Keep me posted about these groups! I’m wildly interested to hear about what everyone’s doing. To report, post a message on the Facebook Page.

Groups have already formed over the world — in places like San Francisco, Singapore, Johannesburg, and Enid, Oklahoma. I’ve met some people who are members of these groups, and I’m always fascinated and thrilled to hear what they’re doing.

And today, finally, I’m ready to send out my NEW and IMPROVED STARTER KIT. If you’re considering starting a happiness-project group, email me at grubin at gretchenrubin dot com. Just write “starter kit” in the subject line. If you requested the old starter kit, but haven’t started your group, you might want the new one.

Many people have started book groups in response to the The Happiness Project. If you’re considering starting that kind of group, the starter kit would be useful to you, too (I hope).

Good luck!

P.S. If you want to start your own individual happiness project, without being part of a group (which is the way I’ve done my happiness project), here are some ideas to help you get started.

* If you’d like the starter kit for starting your own happiness-project group, email me at grubin at gretchenrubin dot com.

  1. Hi Gretchen, I don’t post much here but I do read your blog daily. Your writing today about the energy required to start something really hit home and I forwarded your post to a couple of friends who I know would resonate with it as well. Thanks for the daily inspiration. ~Heidi

scientific studies, and tips from popular culture. In this newsletter, I

The post that generated the most buzz on my blog.

To my surprise, the post that got the most buzz was [3]The power of
re-framing, or, would a ranunculus by another name be as beautiful?

Again to my surprise, the question of [5]Ice cream or cake? generated the
most talk! Also, I gave away three free copies of the book, and a gigantic
number of people threw their name into the hat for that. I’ll do that again
      soon.

      =HELLO!=
I’m writing you because at some point, you asked for information about how
to launch a group for [3]people doing happiness projects together.

At last, after a few false starts, I think I’ve figured out a better way to
help track and engage with these groups.

If you’re in a group now, I’d so appreciate it if you’d answer these [4]six
quick questions — it should take you less than a minute. Among other
things, this information will allow me to make a complete list of the
groups, along with contact information for the groups that want to provide
      that.

  2. I’m probably going to start an online happiness project group in the new year. I’ve been thinking a lot about it but realistically won’t be able to do it this year . I’ll put that on your FB page too, but if anyone would want to join in, feel free to leave a comment to that effect on my blog.

    1. Unfortunately, it’s very hard for me to track when and where groups form.
Alas! In the starter-kit, you’ll see that I encourage people to use Meetup
      — in part because if people use Meetup, it will be much easier to see where
      groups have formed.

So potential group leaders, put your group on Meetup! Please do it even if
your group isn’t open for new people to join. It will be helpful for
everyone to know what’s going on.

  3. I have tried to start what I consider happiness groups. Years ago, the attempt was not serious but I thought very creative and inspiring to women. As it came from anger rather than joy, of course it would never fly.
Of late, I proposed to my 10 girlfriends (most people only have one-I am blessed) that we all go on a trip together to a warmer clime for two weeks. Only one of my friends was willing; some of the others are financially challenged. But, I thought this was a good debt to incurr. I believe fear also played a factor in the negative decisions.
A few years ago, I sent a small gift to my friend’s work place; after her name I put, “Empress of the Universe.” The mailman then bowed when he delivered her mail. Of course, we found this highly amusing.
Then, I thought that as the universe may be infinite, we would need more Empresses to address the issues. So, I went further by inviting my friends to become Empresses (tiaras of each Empresses’ choice are involved).
The idea expanded in my mind to include a month’s paid leave so that we could travel to sacred sites on this planet. I wanted to draft a mandate to the U.N. stating our mission and the need for financial support in the form of an unlimited amount credit card for each of us.
Some of my friends, the more literary and positive thinkers found this idea to their liking and even gave themselves Empress names such as, “Empress of the Celestial Light.”
The original Empress liked the tiara idea but her choice of a sacred site was Harrod’s in London. And why not; we’re women and shopping can be a sacred experience.

  4. Gretchen, I’m Aycan and I read your book this summer. I liked it. This book is very useful for the who want to be happy. Thank you very much  dear. :) This is the first time I’ve read a book about happiness :)

  5. I am wondering if anyone else loves children’s literature as much as I do??

To quote from The Happiness Project,  by Gretchen Rubin,”These books deal openly with the battle between good and evil, they don’t gloss over the horror and fascination of evil.  While adult literature seems to focus on guilt, hypocrisy and the perversion of good intentions.” “What’s more, in keeping with  this good versus evil worldview, children’s literature often plunges  a reader into a world of arcetypes, certain images have a queer power to excite the imagination, and children’s literature uses them with a brilliant effect.”

With a deep understanding of your mission and passion in developing your own Happiness Project, I too have begun my own journey. As the owner of the only literary themed hotel in the country, my dream has always been to share my love of literature and learning with my guests. Reading your book has inspired me and brought my dream to life. You have shown me that my dream is possible. Anything is possible! I hope to begin a “Happiness Project” Group of my own that fosters and cultivates a love of learning, literature and a profound desire for true happiness. Thank you Gretchen for reminding me that any dream is possible…. even my own!

  6. Yes, it’s true that most of us are group ‘joiners’ instead of group ‘starters’.  And then there are those of us who do nothing at all!  For the moment, it jfeels good to join something.  I’ll make becoming a starter one of my future happiness resolutions.
